Lewis "Eddie" Winstead, Jr.

Eddie Winstead was an exceptional student-athlete, who excelled in the classroom, on the basketball court, on the football field in track and in the boxing ring.  Basketball was the first sport that he played.  He loved it.

While attending Winston-Salem State University’s Undergraduate and Graduate programs, Eddie maintained the Dean’s List status with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.7; served on the Varsity Football Team as an All-Star Student-Athlete and assisting the Team with 2 Conference Championship wins; he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Mathematics and the Masters of Science degree in Computer Information Technology.

Eddie’s academic and leadership skills afforded him various employment opportunities including Computer Skills Graduate Assistant and Lab Technician for Winston-Salem State University, an Assistant Team Manager for NASA Langley Research Center; Instructor of Introductory and Intermediate Algebra and Computer Science for Piedmont Community College; and an Elementary School Teacher with Person County Schools.

Eddie was a very mannerable young man who never forgot his roots. He worked diligently in church as a trustee, usher, and male chorus songster. In addition, he loved helping people and was affiliated with the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.

Out of love for Eddie, and in response to his untimely death, family and friends have united to remember him and make a difference in the lives of others.  The charity is particularly focused on assisting student-athletes that would have benefitted from Eddie’s leadership, mentorship, encouragement and training.
